Covered walkways outside buildings and before the streets. Their purpose is to protect you from the elements especially rain and snow or even the too-hot sun. They are often true works of art from the marble floors, columns, decorative ceilings, lights, brass. They are commonly found in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.
In America, a portico usually refers to a small covered area above the front door of a house.
Why am I grateful? Well, this is my walk to and from work today. Quite charming, yes. But not only. I lug heavy equipment behind me. The smooth tile sidewalk makes for easy rolling as opposed to cobble stone streets.
